Wooden Structures—A World of Possibilities

ABC is one of the country’s leading consultants in the field of wood construction, with extensive experience across a wide range of wood projects. In this presentation, we’ll review the projects we’ve worked on and share our experiences with wood, including challenges, opportunities, and solutions—as well as insights from a technological perspective.

In Denmark, we have been building with wood as the load-bearing structures for many years. As precast concrete construction has gained ground, timber structures have often been associated with frame and roof structures.

As stricter requirements for CO2 emissions over a building’s lifetime have been introduced, the demand for building materials with lower energy intensity has increased. Recent research has led to the development of “engineered wood” products, which have revolutionized wood construction and enabled the use of timber structures in both more complex and taller buildings.

In Denmark, just like in the countries around us, we’re beginning to explore opportunities for larger multi-story buildings made of wood, but these new—yet “old”—materials require a thorough understanding to design a timber structure based on the right principles.

Inthis post, we’ll try to share our insights on:

  • Why and when to use wood?
  • What are the current possibilities with timber structures? Including high-rise buildings?
  • Insights into types of wood materials and their optimal uses?
  • How should fire and moisture be addressed?
  • The value of hybrid structures, including how ABC’s own digital tool, ABConcept, can be used to optimize designs and reduce the carbon footprint in construction

Learning Objectives

  • A deeper understanding of the factors to consider when designing with wood
  • A basic understanding of the most important aspects to consider when selecting a building system

What value will you gain from this?

  • Insight into the possibilities of timber structures
  • An idea of what spans and dimensions to choose for a given structure
  • Guidelines on how to design structures sensibly with regard to fire safety
  • Get off to a good start when you choose to build with wood
