About ABConcept

ABConcept is a digital analysis tool developed to optimize designs while reducing the carbon footprint of new construction and renovation projects. With a direct link to BIM and Real-Time LCA, ABConcept provides you with immediate feedback on how changes in geometry, materials, and design principles affect the project’s overall environmental footprint. This creates a transparent and data-driven foundation for making better decisions—early, efficiently, and with greater confidence.

The tool automates a number of manual work processes that normally require extensive calculations and repeated iterations. Instead, ABConcept can quickly scan and compare a large number of proposed solutions and visualize their consequences in just a few seconds. This not only provides insight into the carbon footprint of the structural systems but also a clear understanding of which design parameters drive emissions—and where the greatest potential for improvement lies.

With ABConcept, sustainability becomes an active part of the creative and technical development process. The tool guides the project toward a more climate-friendly direction without compromising architecture, function, or economy. It enables more confident decisions, stronger collaboration, and a solid foundation for creating buildings with a lower climate footprint from the very first sketch.

THE AMBITION FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

Globally, the construction industry has one of the largest carbon footprints. According to the latest report from the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction, the industry accounts for approximately 34% of our CO₂ emissions.

With stricter climate requirements and declining CO₂ limits, the need for ongoing insight into projects’ climate performance is growing. The earlier you optimize structures during the design phase, the better your chances of reducing the overall CO₂ footprint. With a clear ambition to steer the construction industry toward greater sustainability, ABC has developed the digital tool ABConcept—designed to optimize structures and reduce CO₂ emissions as early as the project’s initial sketches.

OPTIMIZATION, EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT, AND CO₂ REDUCTION

ABConcept sets new standards for both work processes and the development of sustainable solutions. The tool streamlines calculations and visualizes design proposals in a matter of moments, providing direct, real-time feedback on even minor changes to your design. This allows you to quickly see how different choices affect the building’s carbon footprint.

Architects, contractors, developers, and engineers thus gain quick access to relevant data—and a much stronger foundation for making the right decisions during the earliest and most critical phases of the project.

Testimonial

"It has been of great value to us that, with ABConcept, we were able to quickly assess the impact of the various design proposals on the overall CO2 footprint, for example, in terms of the choice of form and materials. The ability to get a quick and thorough overview of the different variants was one of the reasons we chose ABC for the project."

Mette Sook Høgel, Senior Developer, ALFA Development

Testimonial

"In our work to find the right design for our project, Buen, it has been invaluable to us that we were able to quickly calculate and visualize the impact of adding more floors to an existing building early in the process. In this way, ABConcept has contributed to greater transparency and insight into the carbon footprint and economic implications of the various solutions."

Thomas Funch-Hansen, Director of Real Estate, Agriculture & Food F.m.b.A.

Testimonial

"It has made the work process easier that ABC, using ABConcept, was able to quickly calculate and visualize the challenges associated with the building, including load. This has made the situation more transparent and easier to understand in terms of the possibilities and consequences of adding more floors to the building, such as the CO2 footprint. It’s an extremely relevant tool in the project’s overall effort to create a climate and economic business case for Copenhagen’s areas near the train station.”

Frederik Agdrup, Project Manager, Tredje Natur

BUILT ON VALID DATA

Documentation is an integral part of ABConcept and also serves as the foundation for the calculation engine. The tool is based on many years of experience and deep technical insight from us as one of the country’s most specialized engineering consultancies.

CO₂ calculations are performed in accordance with applicable ISO standards, and the material data used is based on the generic dataset Table 7, published by the Danish Agency for Housing and Planning.

ABConcept creates value for all stakeholders in the industry

  • Building Owners
  • Architects
  • Contractors

As a building owner, you must make key decisions without always knowing the consequences for the project’s CO₂ footprint, finances, and regulatory compliance.

ABConcept provides a clear overview of the climate impact in the early phases, allowing you to quickly compare multiple design proposals and make more confident decisions. The tool ensures compliance with standards and legal requirements and frees up time for consultants, as calculations are updated automatically. This gives you a solid foundation for achieving the project’s sustainability goals without compromising on functionality or cost.

  • Quick and transparent insight into the carbon footprint in the early phases
  • Ability to compare multiple design proposals and make better decisions
  • Peace of mind regarding regulatory compliance, as well as more efficient consulting and design

As an architect, you balance the client’s ambitions, budgets, and stricter climate requirements, making it challenging to reconcile aesthetics and sustainability. Iterative design processes require ongoing calculations, which often pressure you to choose familiar solutions rather than exploring new ideas.

ABConcept reduces the manual calculation burden and enables you to test far more design scenarios in a short amount of time. With direct integration with Grasshopper, Revit, BIM, and Real-Time LCA, you gain immediate insight into the CO₂ footprint of materials and structures as you design. This provides greater creative freedom and a stronger basis for decision-making in discussions with the client and contractor.

  • Direct and rapid feedback on design changes with Real-Time LCA
  • Ability to test many alternative solutions without additional calculation time
  • A robust data foundation for discussions with clients and contractors regarding CO₂ impacts

As a contractor, you want a better basis for decision-making in the early phases, when high-CO₂ choices are made. Even though you have solid knowledge of economics and materials, you often lack precise data when advising the client on sustainability.

ABConcept provides digital and validated quantities early in the process, so you can quickly compare design proposals and see the implications of materials and geometries. This direct feedback makes it easier to steer the project in a climate-friendly direction while maintaining a clear overview of the budget. The result is better-informed decisions and a stronger role in the dialogue with the client and consultants.

  • Reliable, digital quantities and CO₂ data as early as the design phase
  • Quick comparison of design choices with clear implications for CO₂ and cost
  • A better foundation for advising the client and steering the project toward sustainability
