Nature of the Project

The project involves the construction of a new 6,400 m² neurorehabilitation center for the North Jutland Region in Brønderslev, which will support the rehabilitation of patients with acquired brain injuries.

The new center, also known as Neuro Nord, will be a modern and sustainable facility designed to replace the existing building, which is considered outdated. Two staggered, two-story buildings will be constructed; the ground floor will house treatment and common areas, while the first floor will contain a ward with a total of 30 single rooms, all with private bathrooms, toilets, and balconies.

The project was designed by Cubo Architects and is intended to be a “state-of-the-art” example of restorative and healing architecture, where natural light and green surroundings actively support patients’ rehabilitation and well-being. The new Neuro Nord will be located in the heart of a green setting, where nature is integrated as a central part of the project. All patient rooms are designed with access to natural light, views of the green surroundings, and direct access to the outdoors.

The project is also intended to serve as an example of the North Jutland Region’s focus on sustainability. As the project owner, the region has set ambitious requirements for CO2 reduction, the use of bio-based building materials, and the reuse of materials from the existing hospital. Among other things, bricks are being reused and given new life in the roof and facade design. About half—equivalent to 2,000 square meters—of the old winged roof tiles from the existing buildings will be reused in the new construction.

ABC places a strong emphasis on the reuse of building materials and on promoting circular construction. The project was developed according to the principles of Design for Disassembly, in which materials from the existing hospital are reused, including the distinctive red winged roof tiles, timber rafters for exterior structures, bricks for landscape elements, and concrete paving. The building is also designed so that facades, walls, windows, roof tiles, and floors can be dismantled and reused. This approach prevents construction waste and plays a central role in sustainable development.

Use of ABConcept at Neuro Nord

Our in-house developed digital 3D design tool, ABConcept, has been a key element throughout the design process for the new Neuro Nord.

The model has tracked the project’s development from the bidding phase through detailed design, with the level of detail continuously increasing as new knowledge and clarifications emerged. ABConcept has supported multiple phases by increasing the volume of information and has created a clear coherence in the structural strategy.

In the initial phases, ABConcept was used to prepare qualified estimates of structural dimensions for use in the bidding process. Later, the model served as the basis for transparent and directly documented load transfer.

An interactive Speckle model, such as the one previewed on the right, enables all project parties to access and understand structural principles and loads, which facilitates coordination among the parties.

ABConcept has served as an ongoing decision-making tool that has visualized the impact of individual proposed solutions on both structural and sustainability aspects, and has enabled continuous exploration of alternative solutions.

The project’s client, the North Jutland Region, had high ambitions for the project’s sustainability profile, including a specified requirement for a maximum carbon footprint of 8 kg CO₂e/m²/year for the building. This ambition has been instrumental in shaping the project’s direction, and ABConcept has been used to work toward that goal.

The tool streamlines calculations and visualizes design proposals in a matter of moments, providing direct, real-time feedback on even minor changes to your design. This allows you to quickly see how different choices affect the building’s CO₂ footprint.

Documentation is an integral part of ABConcept and also serves as the foundation for the tool’s calculation engine. It is built on many years of in-house engineering experience and deep technical expertise from ABC, one of the country’s most specialized engineering consulting firms.

The tool’s CO₂ calculations are performed in accordance with current ISO standards, and the material data embedded in the structural elements is based on the generic dataset Table 7, published by the Danish Agency for Housing and Planning.

In this way, ABConcept has not only supported the quality of the building’s design but has also served as a vital tool in supporting the client’s sustainability goals for the project.
