About ABCarpentry

ABCarpentry is an in-house developed digital tool that enables the creation of structural elements made from bio-based materials, which can be sent directly to robotic production. The tool automatically generates frame elements and detailed connection points, creating a building geometry in which all structural elements are ready for production without any additional manual steps.

When the components leave robotic production, they are delivered as a complete assembly kit directly to the construction site, including project- and component-specific documentation that accompanies the materials all the way to installation. The result is an efficient, transparent, and far more streamlined process from design to completed construction.

The Meeting of Tradition and Modernity

Wood has been a fundamental building material for millennia and has historically shaped our Nordic building tradition. Yet, with industrialization and the advent of new materials, it has increasingly been pushed into the background.

With ABCarpentry, we combine the strengths of tradition with today’s technological possibilities. Through digital design tools, automated data management, and robot-based production methods, we are once again making it realistic and attractive to build with bio-based materials. At the same time, we work with a deep respect for the carpenter’s craftsmanship on-site. Our ambition is to develop solutions that support the craftsman, reduce errors, and provide the best conditions for performing the work both efficiently and safely.

Ambition for more bio-based construction

Bio-based building materials such as wood emit significantly less CO₂ than traditional materials like steel and concrete. Therefore, there is an urgent need for solutions that make wood structures more accessible and competitive in modern construction.

ABCarpentry was developed specifically to facilitate this transition. The tool makes it easy to design and produce timber-frame structures using bio-based materials, without compromising on either precision or quality.

By streamlining the documentation process and making work with the materials more efficient—even before the materials arrive at the construction site—we address one of the key challenges in construction: the often lengthy and complex execution phase. This challenge is particularly pressing for timber structures, as they benefit especially from rapid construction. The goal is to make bio-based and sustainable solutions the easy choice.

The Benefits of Robotic Production

Wood construction is particularly vulnerable during the construction phase, when the Nordic climate can negatively affect raw wood elements. That’s why speed and precision are crucial—and this is where robot-manufactured elements offer a significant advantage. By customizing the structures at ABCarpentry and automating both production and documentation, we shorten construction time and ensure a healthier building.

Robot-manufacturing also delivers higher quality and more consistent results, as each component can be inspected, optimized, and pre-treated before it reaches the construction site. Through collaboration with leading players in robotic production, we can automate the process from model to assembly and offer competitive prices through our partner network. Automated data management also ensures that assembly instructions and markings on the components always reflect the latest, most accurate information.

  • Higher quality and productivity through consistent robotic production and pre-processing
  • Direct correlation between components and documentation via automatically generated assembly instructions and markings on the components
  • A shorter and safer construction process that reduces weather-related issues and minimizes delays caused by on-site errors

ABCarpentry has been used to great effect in the Bakkekvarteret neighborhood

In Frederikssund Municipality’s new district, Vinge, the developer Ikano Bolig has built the Bakkekvarteret, a residential area comprising 88 new, CO2-optimized townhouses.

LCA calculations have set the agenda for the project. Consequently, extensive LCA calculations were performed for the project, which were decisive for the construction process, as the team worked backward from the goal of achieving the lowest possible emissions and designed the project based on that starting point.

The goal is for the Bakkekvarteret neighborhood to emit less than 5 kg CO₂-eq./m²/year in accordance with upcoming building codes. To achieve the lowest possible carbon footprint, the buildings’ structures and floor slabs are constructed primarily of wood. The project is expected to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

Here, we used ABCarpentry to parametrically design timber-frame walls, which were sent directly to production and then shipped to the construction site, pre-fabricated and ready for assembly.
