Project Description

Fælledby School will be part of Copenhagen’s new, wood-based neighborhood, Fælledby, built in Ørestaden on the edge of Amager Fælled.

In early July 2024, a team consisting of C.F. Møller Architects, ABC Consulting Engineers, and LEARNING SPACES was named the winner of the competition to build the new Fælledby School, which will be part of Copenhagen’s new, wood-based neighborhood, Fælledby, on the edge of Amager Fælled.

The school will be a five-track school, serving grades 0 through 9, with a capacity for approximately 1,400 students and 160 staff members. In addition to classrooms, the building will also house the City of Copenhagen’s after-school program, a recreation and junior club, and a youth center.

The project has a gross floor area of approximately 18,300 m², plus about 7,400 m² of outdoor space. According to the plans, a large portion of the outdoor areas will be constructed on the school building’s rooftops. The project will also include a gymnasium and a culinary school with an associated production kitchen and dining area.

Located between Ørestaden and the surrounding green spaces on Amager Fælled, the school is designed to blend naturally with its surroundings. The building is intended to serve as a meeting point between urban life and nature, fostering harmony and a sense of connection between the two. Construction is expected to begin in April 2027, with the goal of completion in May 2031.

Quote

"It’s unique to be part of creating an entirely new urban area in Copenhagen, where the school itself is a central hub for our next generation. Furthermore, it’s fantastic to experience the close connection between the city and nature, which Amager Fælled truly symbolizes.”

Sustainability

The intention behind Fælledby School, just as with the rest of Fælledby, is to significantly advance the agenda for wood construction. Therefore, the majority of the school’s shell will consist of wooden elements.

The project’s strong emphasis on sustainability means that strict requirements have been placed on the school’s carbon footprint throughout the process. The project has emphasized the circular economy, and sustainable solutions are being considered in every aspect of the project. The project is set to achieve DGNB Gold certification in accordance with the DGNB 2025 manual.

The choice of materials plays a crucial role not only in the building’s carbon footprint but also in creating energy-efficient and comfortable indoor environments that support and enhance the children’s well-being, happiness, and ability to learn.
