Nature of the Project

ABC served as a sub-consultant on the project, providing selected engineering services to SINUZ Consulting Engineers

The Stationsgården complex of Ballerup Ejendomsselskab was built between 1951 and 1956 as a red-brick building typical of its era and consists of nine partially interconnected blocks with a total of 128 residential units. As part of the renovation of the complex, several residential units will be combined, reducing the total number to 116, of which 30 will be accessible housing units.

Over a number of years, structural engineering surveys have been conducted regarding a range of building-related challenges. The master plan has been developed based on the significant challenges identified and includes:

  • Retrofit insulation of facades
  • New windows, doors, and entryways
  • Mechanically balanced ventilation (all buildings)
  • New roof sheathing, insulation, etc. (all buildings)
  • Mold remediation
  • Renovation of plumbing and electrical systems in basements
  • Renovation of the heating plant
  • Sewer renovation
  • Environmental work: renovation of courtyard facilities

The project also includes the construction of 25 new rooftop apartments to be built on an existing rooftop level that currently houses storage rooms. In addition, five elevator towers will be built on the courtyard facade, providing access to both the rooftop apartments and the accessible housing units.

Stationsgården is an extremely complex project where no single solution is consistent across the various blocks, which were built by different contractors and have undergone numerous changes since then. Additionally, the ground floor houses various private businesses that will be affected by the renovation.

One of our main tasks is to carefully document the existing conditions so that we can advise on solutions related to combining residential units into accessible housing, as well as the extensive renovation of building services. Existing conditions are being documented using 3D Matterport.

The Danish Technological Institute is assisting with tensile and shear tests on the masonry, which will contribute to a completely new stability analysis of Stationsgården.
