Nature of the Project

In collaboration with Arkitekterne.as (BaLS Arkitekter A/S), ABC was commissioned to provide engineering services for the expansion and renovation of Tinderhøj School in Rødovre.

The school consists of several sections. Single-story buildings were to be expanded with new corridors and common areas, allowing existing classrooms and other spaces to be expanded into the former corridor areas.

The school also includes three-story buildings. These buildings were to be renovated internally to optimize the user experience at the school. Classrooms, activity zones, restroom facilities, group rooms, hallways, and much more were to be expanded and modified.

For the structural portion of the project, the renovation plan required the design of new structures as well as the inspection and reinforcement of existing ones. A wide range of materials was used, as the property’s load-bearing elements above ground consist primarily of brick walls and floor slabs made of steel-reinforced concrete.

Extensions were constructed using lightweight timber structures, a choice that was also reflected in the architectural design. The interior renovation was primarily designed using steel and wood to optimize material costs and streamline the construction process for the contractor.

Steensen Varming designed the HVAC, ventilation, electrical systems, and lighting design. New requirements for indoor air quality in schools necessitated ventilation with relatively high airflow rates. By using low-impulse air supply, an optimal and draft-free indoor climate was ensured for students and teachers.

At the same time, all classrooms were upgraded with modern AV/IT installations that support contemporary teaching methods. All drawing materials were designed in 3D using Revit, and structural design for selected structural components was also performed using 3D modeling in the FEM-Design program StruSoft. By using these programs, the client was able to best protect against unforeseen circumstances, and optimal material utilization was achieved, thereby ensuring the best possible project economics.
