ABC Consulting Engineers, together with Arkil, INFRA, Norrplan, and Swietelsky AG, has been awarded the project to build DSB’s new KAC washing and graffiti removal facility in Kastrup
The new flushing and graffiti removal facility will be built as an extension of the existing DSB workshop, KAC, to expand the workshop’s capacity and facilities
In addition to the construction of a new large hall building, the project also involves extensive track-related work, including the replacement of the existing RCS system, which is being carried out while the workshop remains fully operational.
General contractor Arkil is responsible for overall project management, while ABC is in charge of design management and the engineering disciplines of structural engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, traffic control, and ICT during the design phase. INFRA is providing engineering services in the areas of traction power, track engineering, and civil works during the design phase, and Norrplan is providing architectural services. During the project’s construction phase, Arkil and Swietelsky will carry out the majority of the project, although ABC will continue in the role of ICT manager.
The project team was awarded the contract back in March, and a kick-off workshop was held in April, after which work has now truly gotten underway. The next step is to finalize the project design in preparation for submitting the regulatory project and project proposal in November. According to the schedule, the new high-pressure washing and graffiti removal facility will be completed and ready for handover by the end of 2028.
Close Collaboration During the Bidding Phase
"All stakeholders actively contributed to the final presentation during the bidding phase, and through close collaboration and feedback, we have delivered a polished and targeted product. In the bid evaluation, we also scored the highest on precisely those soft values, which were heavily weighted in the decision. I have no doubt that the effort the entire bid team put into preparing this presentation was crucial to our positive evaluation."
Winning this bid marked the beginning of a long and strong project collaboration, but the strong partnership actually began long before the bid was awarded
The success stems from a very close and productive collaboration during the bidding phase regarding the preparation of the bid materials, led by Project Managers Henrik Strynø Christensen and Teit Honore from Arkil, during which representatives from the project team’s stakeholders held a series of meetings and workshops focused on preparing presentations of stakeholders and key personnel, phase and organizational structures, job descriptions, and more.
In the evaluation of the respective bids, the bidding team thus received the highest scores for the so-called “soft” values, which were a deliberate focus area and the centerpiece of the intensive process leading up to the submission of the bid.
On this project, engineering services are divided between ABC Consulting Engineers and INFRA, both of which serve as consultants to the general contractor Arkil
INFRA brings a wealth of extensive experience in the field of rail engineering, including from a number of major projects for Banedanmark, Lokaltog, and other players in the sector, while ABC contributes our extensive expertise in project management, structural engineering, and building systems.
But it’s not just engineering services that ABC and INFRA share—we also share office space. INFRA is one of the tenants in the shared office space at ABC’s headquarters in Glostrup, and this proximity was a decisive factor in the bidding process.
Under One Roof
“Working together under one roof has been both valuable and value-creating. With two areas of expertise, each from its own market sector, we’ve identified shared strengths that have laid the foundation for a strong bid and a successful project. It’s a collaboration we at INFRA are truly proud of, and with this project, it’s becoming a reality.”
The very foundation of the shared office space was to bring together professionals from different fields and industry niches, thereby facilitating strong collaboration among them
This has proven to be fruitful, as ABC and INFRA already have several successful collaborations on projects, and therefore there was also a strong relationship between the companies, which we have built upon in the lead-up to this project.
Amir Bigdeli, a partner at INFRA, explains:“What started as casual conversations by the coffee machine in the cafeteria quickly evolved into serious discussions about bidding on the project together. Our experience working together and the mutual trust we share meant we could easily take the plunge. So, in many ways, this project is the culmination of an already strong working relationship.”
Thus, the neighborly relationship isn’t just a strength once the deal is sealed and the project collaboration gets underway—in this context, the neighborly relationship was actually one of the keys to the deal being sealed in the first place.
