Nature of the Project
Bagsværd Observational Home is one of the country’s few specialized residential institutions that assesses, supports, and treats vulnerable children and families with the aim of creating the best possible conditions and future prospects for the children.
The facility’s physical environment is outdated, both as temporary housing for children and families and as a setting for social work. There is a need to rethink and develop a new environment that can serve as an integrated and supportive element of the educational and social work.
The project for the Bagsværd Observation Home is a combination of new construction, an addition, and renovation: The new construction covers approximately 1,100 m², while the renovation of the old villa covers approximately 550 m². The project is led by the lead consultant JAJA Architects, who have formed a team with ABC Consulting Engineers and BOGL Landscape Architects, respectively.
The new construction will replace the existing building from the 1960s, with a focus on creating a sense of home while integrating functions for the administrative and educational environment.
The villa will continue to appear elegant and be preserved in its original form, retaining its stately character and role as a central gathering place. The connection between the two buildings should appear natural, yet maintain a respectful distance between them. The area is also subject to various nature conservation regulations and special requirements.
The project is being carried out in partnership with the A.P. Møller Foundation and Realdania at the initiative of the National Association LIVSVÆRK, which consists of a number of independent institutions and programs, including Bagsværd Observationshjem.
Quote
“Bagsværd Observationshjem is a truly unique project aimed at creating a safe environment and a good daily life for vulnerable families. So it’s an initiative that serves a greater purpose. An interesting fact is that the original existing building was the royal dentist’s summer residence.”
Sustainability
The client has made it a top priority to construct the new building as sustainably as possible and selected ABC based, among other things, on our expertise in CLT elements, as well as our general specialized knowledge of load-bearing structures and sustainability.
Since the project is being built in accordance with the voluntary sustainability class, JAJA Architects is providing sustainability management in collaboration with ABC. To this end, we provide essential calculations: Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), total cost of ownership, and life-cycle costs (LCC), which document and ensure that the construction project fully complies with the sustainability concept
