Nature of the Project

The project comprises a daycare center with a total floor area of 1,840 m² and, in addition, approximately 246 m² of unheated space for, among other things, a nap room and sheds/storage.

Daycare Center 3.2 in Ørestaden was designed by the architectural firm Nøhr & Sigsgaard (TRUST) for the City of Copenhagen.

The buildings consist of four stories plus a rooftop level with roof terraces providing access to the rooftop playground and utility rooms.

TRUST is the name of the strategic partnership agreement the firm has entered into with the City of Copenhagen’s Department of Children and Youth, valued at approximately 2.3 billion DKK over four years. The TRUST partnership consists of Nøhr & Sigsgaard, Enemærke & Petersen, DOMINIA, Norconsult, GHB Landskab, and KANT Architects. For this project, ABC has been engaged as a sub-consultant to provide technical consulting and assistance regarding structural engineering.

For this project, ABC is providing structural engineering consulting, including the completion of the project proposal, the regulatory submission, and the detailed design.

The building is founded on drilled concrete piles/well foundations with self-supporting foundation beams and a ground-level slab. Elevator shafts are constructed using in-situ cast concrete and are watertight. The ground floor slab is designed as a lightly reinforced, cast-in-place concrete slab that acts as a self-supporting structure, spanning between point and strip foundations as well as supplementary bored pile foundations. The floor slabs are designed as filigree slabs.

Upright filigree beams and a rough surface on the filigree shells ensure that the prefabricated shell and the cast-in-place concrete overlay function together as a continuous slab. The on-site reinforcement ensures that the slabs function as a plate that both distributes the horizontal forces to the stabilizing walls and meets the requirements for structural integrity.

Beams are constructed as steel-concrete composite beams. The beams are cast on site in conjunction with the casting of the filigree slabs. The beams are constructed with embedded plates, which ensure a composite effect between the steel and concrete.
