Nature of the Project

The Floating Activity Center is designed to support active sports and outdoor recreation on and around the water and to serve as a hub for a burgeoning community life in the Nordhavn neighborhood

The Floating Activity Center, featuring a community room, restroom and shower facilities, a sauna, and changing rooms, is docked at Sandkaj, the main promenade of the Århusgade neighborhood —right next to Nordhavn’s official swimming area, by the wide, south-facing seating steps in front of the converted Portland Towers cement silos, and with a view of FN-Byen on the opposite side.

The Floating Activity Center is designed to support active sports and outdoor recreation on and by the water and to serve as a framework for a burgeoning community life in the Nordhavn neighborhood. It is a modern take on a compact urban facility where access to the water and social interaction are the focus, inspired by the harbor’s original character.

By & Havn, Nordhavn’s development company, is behind the floating activity center, but the City of Copenhagen will assume ownership and operation in partnership with the affiliated associations.

The total construction cost is 11,400,000 kroner. By & Havn is contributing 7 million kroner to the project’s budget, KKFF is contributing 2.5 million kroner, and Lokale og Anlægsfonden is providing 1.9 million kroner in support.

The Floating Activity Center is movable and built on standard modular pontoons that can easily be relocated or scaled up to create a larger facility. It reimagines traditional boathouses with large windows, outdoor spaces, and high architectural and recreational value, where the indoors and outdoors blend together to give users the experience of being close to the water, wind, and weather.

The buildings are constructed using solid oak frames. The frame corners are joined with hidden fasteners in the form of slotted steel plates and steel dowels.
