Nature of the Project

Across the country, there are approximately 1,200 cabins and group centers that bring together 100,000 children and young people every week. Many of these cabins are older and will need to be either renovated or replaced in the coming years. Therefore, the A.P. Møller Foundation, in collaboration with the Scouts and FDF, has launched an ambitious initiative aimed at improving the quality of scout cabins and district centers nationwide.

LETH & GORI, in collaboration with Rønnow Architects and VEGA Landscape, has won the A.P. Møller Foundation’s architectural competition for “The Scout Cabin of the Future,” held in collaboration with the Scouts and FDF.

ABC will provide engineering consulting services for the project. With LETH & GORI’s proposal for “The Scout Cabin of the Future,” they have reimagined the classic scout cabin, both in form and function. The hut opens up to the green surroundings, inviting nature inside and encouraging users to step outside.

The load-bearing structures are primarily made of wood, and the interior spaces are compact and accommodate the most essential basic functions a scout association needs. There are covered terraces and outdoor areas sheltered from the elements, as well as shelter spots beneath the large, open roof structure.

The Scout Cabin of the Future is the result of a user-involvement process, and is intended to help ensure that the more than 1,200 scout cabins across the country—which each year accommodate more than 100,000 children and young people—receive a much-needed renovation.

The project is part of a donation of 80 million DKK, intended to ensure a high-quality, attractive environment for the many Scout groups that use the cabins, with the hope that more children and young people will choose to join the Scouts or FDF in the future.

Sustainability

Building for future generations also requires building sustainably, as we have a responsibility to ensure that even the youngest generations have a healthy world to grow up in.

The Scout Cabin of the Future must be in close harmony with the surrounding nature. That is why sustainability is also a top priority for the project. The cabins are primarily built on screw piles, making them circular structures that can be disassembled.

The load-bearing structures are designed as timber-frame constructions to reduce the carbon footprint. The buildings are primarily constructed of wood and will serve as both a landscape feature and a space where nature and community are invited right into the heart of the cabin. The project reimagines the traditional scout cabin with a focus on integration with nature and sustainability.
