Nature of the Project

The project involves the construction of a new recycling center in Give for the client, Vejle Municipality. The recycling center is a pilot project for the municipality, serving as a master model for all future recycling centers in the area.

It therefore includes all the state-of-the-art facilities required for a modern recycling center, including ventilation at the hazardous waste reception area, sunken and covered containers for easy waste drop-off in dry weather, a wash area for cleaning trailers, a quick-service lane with containers for the most common types of waste, allowing for quick entry and exit for easy waste drop-off, as well as a separate area for yard waste.

As part of the project, a logistical analysis and optimization were also carried out at the recycling center, covering both traffic flow at the facility and processes related to emptying and distribution of goods, and restroom facilities were constructed for users, along with a staff building for the center’s employees.

The recycling center consists of two long, serpentine roof structures and a total of three buildings. The canopies are constructed as a steel structure with a wooden roof system. Two of the station’s three buildings are unheated, intended for the handling of hazardous waste, and are built into the canopy.

The third building houses heated facilities for the facility’s staff and is located under the same canopy as the unheated buildings. The canopies also serve as a roof for the site’s containers.

The design is based on an organic principle and is inspired by the surrounding nature, which is reflected, among other things, in the buildings’ soft forms and the use of natural materials, including the wood cladding on the facades and the exposed wooden rafters.

Furthermore, the structural choices also address the challenges posed by the fact that the complex is built on an open field. Here, wind loads are particularly high, and the buildings are constructed on a 16-meter-deep foundation, which affects the foundation design since it precludes the use of pile and strip foundations.
