Nature of the project
Green Solution House, commonly known as Hotel GSH, is located in Rønne on Bornholm and primarily serves as a hotel and conference center.
Green Solution House serves as a showcase for sustainable and eco-friendly building solutions and has received several awards for its sustainable approach, including the EU Sustainability Award.
When Hotel GSH in Rønne opened its doors to a new guest wing, the construction project was not only CO2-neutral but also climate-positive. This is possible because the guest wing is built, clad, and insulated entirely with wood. The expectation is that the building will have a positive climate impact, as wood naturally absorbs CO2.
The building relies exclusively on natural ventilation via skylights and open areas, which completely eliminates the need for mechanical ventilation. Finally, a defining feature of the building is that all of its components can be reused.
The new hotel wing will be built, clad, and insulated entirely with wood—a first for a commercial building in Denmark. At Green Solution House, attention has also been paid to the details. The building’s carpets absorb dust particles, the drywall on the walls reduces formaldehyde concentrations, and the roof membrane neutralizes pollution particles from traffic. A wall covered with plants provides fresh oxygen, stabilizes humidity, and cools the building during the summer months.
The building is classified as impact class CC2, and all structural components are classified as structural class 2 (KK2). The floor separations consist of CLT elements with a concrete overlay (due to sound insulation requirements) spanning between CLT walls. Exterior walls are constructed as CLT walls serving as the rear wall, with a traditional building envelope clad in wood.

"Green Solution House isn’t the world’s largest project, but it’s nonetheless an incredibly unique one. The bar has been set high, with CLT serving as the driving force throughout. If you’re heading to the Sunshine Island this summer, I’d highly recommend staying at this incredibly sustainable and awesome hotel.”
Sustainability
Green Solution House has built Denmark’s first climate-positive commercial building, clad and insulated with wood that naturally absorbs CO2, effectively turning the building into a kind of CO2 bank
Green Solution House takes a holistic approach to sustainability that includes a combination of reusable materials, energy production, water purification, and food waste reduction.
The hotel applies principles such as the cradle-to-cradle philosophy and has implemented more than 75 sustainable solutions. Some examples include solar panels in the windows, biological water purification using algae and plants, the reuse of demolished building materials, and the conversion of food waste into energy and fertilizer.
Today, GSH has positioned itself as a frontrunner in sustainable hotel operations, the circular economy, and climate-friendly construction solutions, and has won several Danish and international awards, including the EU Environment Prize in 2016, and has been featured in The Guardian, where it was named one of the ten most climate-friendly hotels in Europe.
