Project Description

The Nørre Voldgade 15 (NVG) project comprises two buildings right next to Nørreport Station, located at Nørre Voldgade 15 and Linnégade 16B, respectively. The location is extremely attractive, right in the heart of Copenhagen on one of the busiest streets in the country, and close to popular shopping destinations.

The existing buildings previously housed both offices and private residences, and these are now undergoing a complete renovation. The courtyards between the two buildings are being excavated to create a new basement level, where both this level and the ground floor will house a new retail store.

In addition, a new steel-and-glass connecting structure will be built to link the two buildings, transforming the project’s entire 8,300 m² area into a single mixed-use complex featuring apartments, offices, and retail spaces.

Furthermore, the project involves extensive changes to the roof area, where the existing roof structure will be demolished to make way for a new steel structure. A new penthouse area will also be created, featuring rooftop apartments and a large rooftop terrace. An LED advertising sign will also be installed facing Nørre Voldgade.

Both on the rooftop terrace and in the courtyard areas, communal spaces will be created for use by all occupants of the complex, helping to provide natural breathing spaces in the bustling city center.

Quote

“The location makes the Nørre Voldgade project special. It’s certainly technically interesting to convert a historic building with half-timbered interior walls into a new, modern office, retail, and residential building. Structurally, it has also been a major undertaking, involving the excavation of new basements in both courtyards, the creation of a ground floor, and the design of a new rooftop level with a terrace. A fun and truly challenging project.”

Sustainability

At ABC, we specialize in renovation and transformation projects to avoid wasting usable building materials and to reduce the need to produce new building materials.

The project involves a complete renovation and transformation of two existing buildings rather than a new construction—which means reusing existing structures and thus reducing the carbon footprint associated with materials and transportation. By reusing as much of the existing structure as possible, the project avoids both environmentally harmful transportation of construction waste away from the project site and the need to produce new, CO₂-intensive structural elements for the construction. This has been the case, for example, at NVG 15.

The new steel-and-glass connecting structure links the two existing buildings and creates a cohesive space—a modern addition focused on efficiency and the utilization of existing building stock.

Green spaces have been created both in the courtyard and on the rooftop terrace—including new plantings and trees—which contribute to increased recreational opportunities, biodiversity, and a better microclimate for the building’s users.

The project aims to achieve DGNB Gold certification.
