Project Type
The new school in Sundby is Denmark’s first to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
The vision for the school building is that it should blend harmoniously with the surrounding green spaces. Straw is available in abundance locally and has been a key element in much of the area’s traditional architecture. Therefore, the building is clad in straw bio-facades, both to honor local history and to ensure the building blends in with its surroundings. All around the roof, there will be green spaces for recreational use by the school’s students.
The school is the first Swan-labeled permanent school building in Denmark and complies with the energy requirements for Low-Energy Class 2020 in accordance with BR18.
The project was taken over following the bankruptcy of the former general contractor. It was initially put out to bid for a general consultant to take over, and involves completion and construction work, which will then be put out to bid as general contractor contracts. The scope of work includes final design of the landscaping project and technical installations, as well as redesign of roof areas. The general consultant is also responsible for dealing with regulatory authorities, the bidding process, construction management, and the final handover.
Sustainability
Sundskolen in Guldborgsund was designed with sustainability in mind and is Denmark’s first Swan-labeled school.
This means it was built with a focus on minimizing environmental impact through an integrated approach to learning and the landscape, where the school creates a protective yet open space for students.
The school’s design focuses on creating a space where students can both learn and explore their surroundings, linking instruction to the natural landscape. And its Nordic Swan Ecolabel status indicates that sustainability and environmental friendliness were taken into account during construction.
