Nature of the Project
The rooftop terrace at Øresundskollegiet has been transformed from a barren gray concrete roof into a nature-rich, green oasis that serves as a setting for the dorm’s social communities.
The project is called “The Social Spine” and was designed by SLA in collaboration with Arki_Lab, ABC, and Optimus Anlæg for the client, Øresundskollegiet / PAB, and the construction manager, FA09.
The Social Spine is a direct extension of Øresundskollegiet’s 1970s vision of community. From the very beginning, the project has therefore focused on creating an optimal setting for social communities, with the involvement of a residents’ council. With The Social Spine, the 1970s vision has truly been realized.
Since its completion in the summer of 2022, the terrace has been a popular gathering place for residents to read, share meals, and host parties.
The project has strengthened the sense of community at Øresundskollegiet while also fulfilling residents’ wishes for greening and sustainable materials.
The Social Spine has received the Scandinavian Green Roof Award 2022—the Nordic region’s most prestigious award for green roofs. The award is given to the best and most innovative green roof in Scandinavia.
