Nature of the Project
The project at Elna Munchs Plads in Vanløse involves the construction of a multifunctional building with a grocery store on the ground floor and residential units for people with special needs on the upper floors.
The project is part of the City of Copenhagen’s focus on creating more modern housing options for residents with special needs, including individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The project was developed in close collaboration with the Social Services Administration and is based on a functional program designed to support residents’ development and well-being. The residential facility covers a total of 3,200 m² and contains 33 units, all with their own kitchen, bathroom, and toilet. The building features large windows that ensure natural light in both the units and common areas.
The building is five stories high on the side facing Ålekistevej and two stories high on the side facing Egholmsvej, and is designed with a particular focus on noise reduction between the busy main street and the surrounding residential neighborhood. The architecture draws inspiration from the existing building character of the local area, with facades constructed of red brick masonry and hipped tile roofs, creating a classic and harmonious appearance.
The project also includes the construction of a new LIDL grocery store, approximately 1,200 m², with associated car and bicycle parking spaces. The existing bus turnaround at Elna Munchs Plads will be redesigned and adapted to the new development, and small rest areas will be established for the bus company Movia, along with a publicly accessible restroom. Upon completion, Elna Munchs Plads will emerge as a new, vibrant gathering place in the heart of Vanløse. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
Sustainability
The project focuses on reducing CO2 emissions and creating a healthy indoor environment for residents. Circular material solutions are being implemented, including recycled bricks in the facades as well as reused materials in the lightweight facades and in ground-level paving.
ABC has performed LCA calculations for the project, which document the building’s life cycle and ensure that it meets the established sustainability concept. A DGNB screening has also been conducted, in which the project is assessed as capable of achieving the DGNB Silver certification level.
