Nature of the Project
The project involves both the renovation of an existing warehouse and the construction of new space for laboratory facilities for the analysis and research company Eurofins
The existing building on the site was originally constructed in 1980 for warehouse purposes, with an adjacent administrative building; the administrative building will be preserved, but large sections of the warehouse building will be partially demolished to make way for a new wing that will house new testing and laboratory facilities.
The warehouse and administrative building is a traditional post-and-beamstructure with prestressed concrete columns and steel trusses, constructed primarily on a single level, with a mezzanine floor in a smaller area consisting of precast concrete hollow-core slabs.
Of this, approximately 1,000 m² will be retained, including the mezzanine level, which will undergo a partial change of use, as parts of the existing storage area will be converted for laboratory purposes; however, this will not alter the load-bearing and stabilizing structures. In addition, parts of the preserved building will be used as utility rooms for installations and office space on the inserted floor. The rest of the existing building will not change use and will therefore continue to be used primarily as storage in the future.
The newly constructed laboratory wing will have an area of approximately 650 m² on a single level above ground and will be built independently of the existing structures, though it will be positioned as an extension of them. In addition to the new laboratory areas, the new building will also house office space for 5–10 people who are expected to work in the laboratories on a daily basis, as well as a reception area and hallways providing access to the existing warehouse building.
On this project, ABC has served as a sub-consultant to INGENIØR'NE, responsible for the design of the building’s load-bearing structures for both the renovation and new construction. The new building is being constructed as a traditional slab-in-slab structure with precast concrete wall panels and concrete slabs, where the building’s stability is ensured through the slab-in-slab effect in the floor and wall structures.
