Nature of the Project

The project involves the construction of three new residential blocks on building sites C2, C3, and C5, respectively, in Copenhagen’s new sustainable neighborhood, Fælledby, near Amager Fælled.

The homes have direct access to the nearby green common, and the vision is therefore to create a sustainable and climate-friendly residential area of the future that will exist in close harmony with nature. Consequently, Fælledby is also Copenhagen’s first neighborhood where wood serves as the primary building material in the load-bearing structures, and where the buildings are clad in green facades made of recycled materials.

The structures are built with columns and beam rows of glued laminated timber (glulam), with CLT floors and gable walls. The building envelope consists of lightweight, prefabricated wooden cassettes for the roof and facade, which are mounted on the exterior of the load-bearing timber structure.

The three blocks draw inspiration from old warehouses, so the wooden structures are exposed, clearly revealing how the buildings are constructed. The strong visual presence of brick and wood—traditional Danish building materials—gives Fælledby a sense of local roots and allows the neighborhood to blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. In addition to access to the green communal areas, the residential blocks are also a short distance from the Sundby and Bellacenteret metro stations.

Quote

"Fælledby is an excellent example of how it is possible to build high-quality housing while reducing the use of steel and concrete, with wood instead serving as the primary building material in the load-bearing structures. In many ways, this is the future of our approach to construction."

Sustainability

In 2021, Fælledby was recognized as the largest sustainable construction project in Europe. As a result, it has received significant political attention and, not least, widespread public interest.

The development of the local plan and the numerous preliminary studies have ensured the highest standards of sustainability and environmental consideration in the construction and landscaping projects. Construction site C5 was pre-certified for DGNB Platinum in 2024, and the two remaining construction sites, C2 and C3, are expected to achieve the same status in 2025.

In addition, all three construction sites are also expected to achieve the DGNB Heart distinction based on measures related to the buildings’ indoor climate, which are designed to ensure the health and well-being of users.
