Project Description

The Gadehavegård housing development in Høje-Taastrup consists of 19 apartment buildings with a total of 995 public housing units, a community center, and laundry facilities.

The development covers a total of 72,000 square meters of floor area and was built between 1977 and 1981.

Since 2012, Gadehavegård has appeared on the government’s list of particularly vulnerable residential areas and has been included in the so-called “ghetto plan.” In 2015, the housing complex thus met all five criteria on the “ghetto list.” This paints a negative picture of the complex, while other figures tell a different story (Landsbyggefonden.dk). As part of a comprehensive social housing master plan for Gadehavegård, the housing units are to be transformed, and the proportion of public family housing is to be reduced to a maximum of 40% by 2030.

The purpose of the comprehensive social housing plan for Gadehavegård is to help increase safety and well-being among residents in the neighborhood, to help more young people and adult residents enter education and the workforce, and to help more parents develop the skills to provide their children with a good upbringing that ensures a life free from crime.

The development of Gadehavegård must build on the area’s resources and potential. A neighborhood that effectively mobilizes its resources to promote lifelong learning. This can be achieved by creating a youth and educational environment—for example, by establishing youth housing—and by bringing together students in transition programs at Gadehaveskolen.

In and around Gadehavegård are a number of knowledge and educational institutions—CPH West, Høje Taastrup Gymnasium, and the Danish Technological Institute—which offer the potential to create greater diversity in the resident population.

Finally, there will be a focus on renovating existing buildings and creating new, attractive housing with a healthy indoor climate and low energy consumption, featuring a varied housing supply, housing types, and architectural styles, with the goal of attracting more affluent residents.

Resident Involvement

Residents of Gadehavegård have had the opportunity since 2018 to participate in a resident engagement process, where participants can influence and contribute good ideas to the master plan for Gadehavegård. Resident involvement will take the form of a series of three workshops, scheduled to take place in the fall of 2018. The process is facilitated by the lead consultant Arkitema and covers the following themes:

  • Merging of apartments
  • Bathroom renovations
  • Renovation of outdoor areas

Quote

“The completion of a comprehensive plan to transform a ghetto area. A massive project that will take nearly a decade to complete. There has been a strong focus on preserving and reusing the existing structures and leveraging the building’s original structural characteristics to create new, modern public housing.”
