Nature of the Project

Since 1952, Viking plays have been staged in Frederikssund every summer in late June and early July. The town’s beautiful open-air stage serves as the setting for a theatrical performance that brings the drama of the Viking Age to life.

The plot of the Viking plays is based on Danish Viking legends and myths. In addition to the performance, four Viking markets are held each year, attracting vendors from near and far. Vikingernes Verden welcomes 20,000 visitors each year, and the association consists of nearly 600 volunteer “Vikings” of all ages.

Gimle is a two-story Viking house and one of the central buildings at Vikingernes Verden in Frederikssund. The ground floor has a floor area of approximately 150 m², while the first floor is only 125 m². Gimle serves as a gathering place for the Vikings during theater performances. The ground floor will house a café area, a commercial kitchen, restrooms, a workshop, and a storage area, while the first floor will feature a meeting room and a sewing room.

Gimle burned down in March 2020, so the building must be rebuilt. The structure will be a wooden frame building set on a concrete foundation. The roof is designed as a gable roof with a ridge beam spanning from exterior wall to exterior wall. The exterior walls will be constructed with a wooden frame clad with horizontal boards on the facades as siding.

The main structure of the Viking house is classified as medium consequence class and construction class 2; therefore, the project must be reviewed by a certified KK2 structural engineer.

ABC conducts its own independent KK2 review.
