Nature of the Project
This project involves a comprehensive transformation of the headquarters of the trade union Ledernes. The client wanted to preserve the property, which has housed the organization for many decades, but also had numerous requirements regarding the office’s use and operation that the building could not meet
Instead of demolishing the building and constructing a new one, the project therefore involves both the renovation of the existing buildings and the construction of a new addition both above and to the side of the building, as well as a comprehensive energy optimization effort for the entire office.
Specifically, the project includes the addition of a new third floor, improvements to the connections between the office’s existing floors, the creation of a central common area around the building’s internal staircases, and an improvement of the office’s overall floor plans. The goal is to create a more cohesive office building with flexible spaces for its users.
As part of the project, we will explore ways to optimize daylight conditions and indoor climate to create better working conditions for the office’s users; in addition, we will experiment with the use of bio-treated materials for retrofitting insulation in the existing building in the long term.
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF TRANSFORMATION
The transformation of Ledernes’ headquarters is one of eight national showcase projects selected by Realdania to demonstrate how bio-based solutions can be used in the renovation and transformation of existing buildings
The headquarters is a building typical of the 1980s–1990s, constructed as a traditional concrete office building with up to six stories above ground. Since this type of building is found in many locations throughout the country, it holds enormous untapped potential that is relevant to both public and private actors in the construction sector.
Throughout the project, we will experiment with how best to repurpose the existing structure, as well as how bio-based insulation materials can best be used to retrofit these types of existing buildings.
The solutions developed and applied in the project are thus expected to be scalable to many similar buildings across the country, and as a pilot project, the transformation of Ledernes’ headquarters will therefore help contribute new knowledge to the industry.
The lessons learned from the project will be made available upon completion, and the hope is that this knowledge will help promote the renovation and transformation of existing properties.
This is crucial for transitioning to more climate-friendly construction, both because the use of bio-based materials plays a major role in reducing the sector’s emissions, and because it helps adapt our buildings to future climate change.
