Nature of the Project
This project involves the construction of a new cafeteria building, as well as a CNC corridor in the form of a walkway connecting buildings AE and AF, at Novo Nordisk’s large production site in Kalundborg
The approximately 1,100 m² cafeteria building will be constructed with 2–4 stories above ground and will serve employees from the two aforementioned buildings, AE and AF, as well as employees from building BD. The building is intended to serve as a natural gathering place for the approximately 300 employees across related functions.
The cafeteria is designed as an open, welcoming space with high ceilings, where acoustics and natural light are optimized to provide employees with a pleasant respite to enjoy their breaks. In addition, the cafeteria is organized into several zones that accommodate various types of seating and furnishing arrangements, allowing it to function as a flexible meeting space where short meetings and informal conversations can take place.
The building features entrance areas on the ground floor, a cafeteria with a buffet and dining areas, serving and dishwashing facilities on the first floor, kitchen facilities with an adjoining staff room, serving facilities, industrial dishwashing, storage rooms and goods receiving areas on the second floor, as well as utility areas on the third floor
The interaction between the kitchen, the buffet area, and the serving facilities is organized with a focus on creating both good working conditions for the staff and efficient operations. Careful consideration has been given to the flow of movement through the serving area to make lunch service as relaxed and efficient as possible.
In the design of the cafeteria, the kitchen was not treated as a secondary function, as is often the case in projects of this type. Instead, a conscious effort was made to ensure ample natural light and good views from the kitchen facilities, and spacious areas were created for the necessary equipment, dishwashing facilities, and food delivery.
This was done to provide optimal conditions for the kitchen staff, which will contribute to a healthy and well-functioning work environment where employees can work safely and efficiently, maintain a clear overview, while also ensuring good operating conditions throughout the day.
The CNC corridor is located at the first-floor level and, in addition to connecting the two buildings, will also serve as direct access to buildings AE and AF, as well as indirect access to building BD, as the walkway connects it to building AE
This not only ensures good access to the cafeteria for employees from the surrounding buildings but also strengthens the connection between the various structures. Airlock areas have been established at the entrances to the CNC corridor.
The proportions of the structure have been designed so that the building blends naturally into the existing complex, which has also been a factor in the choice of materials.
Particular emphasis was placed on integrating the existing building, AE, into the design, as it has a distinctive architectural character and a history worthy of preservation.
