Project Description
The Sjælsø Care Center is located in Birkerød in scenic surroundings overlooking Lake Sjælsø. The care center consists of existing care residences, a day center, a laundry facility, and its own central kitchen.
The project involves a gradual expansion in three phases. Based on the client’s vision and Rudersdal Municipality’s policy on elderly care and dignity, the goal is to create a comprehensive development plan that not only adds new care residences, but also unifies the entire area into a cohesive whole that reflects its fantastic location along Lake Sjælsø.
The care center’s new residences and master plan focus on minimizing negative environmental impacts, which are addressed through LCA variant analyses and a comprehensive LCC analysis, key points in the Voluntary Sustainability Class (FBK), and the synergy between FBK and DGNB.
The 148 new care residences, each measuring 45 m², are arranged in slender, linear buildings grouped in pairs around a common area. The long buildings are laid out in a spiral around the existing care center, thereby naturally integrating the new construction with the existing buildings.
The units will feature high-quality spatial design and private terraces or French balconies offering excellent views of the surroundings, and the common areas will feature a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, with open areas between the buildings, which fulfills the vision of community.
The buildings will be constructed using lightweight concrete elements with wooden cassettes on the facades and roof. The cassettes will be clad with exposed brick on the ground floor and wood paneling on the first floor.
Soil conditions would generally allow for direct deep foundations, but to reduce the carbon footprint and the amount of concrete, the project will instead be constructed on reinforced concrete piles, as this results in lower overall CO2 emissions. The project is thus fully in line with ABC’s passion and ambition to deliver sustainable, comprehensive solutions that contribute to the quality of life for residents and staff.
