Project Description
At Rovsingsgade 68 in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, there was a 7,200 m² abandoned warehouse that was converted into office space in 2022.
Rovsingsgade 68 is a renovation of the original warehouse building, which is being transformed into an office building and other commercial spaces. The project was designed by Mangor & Nagel Architects.
The building has a total of three stories and a total floor area of 7,200 m². A new 260 m² rooftop terrace is being constructed, along with an adjacent, partially underground utility building of 70 m². A hole is being cut in the existing concrete slab to create an atrium in the center of the building. All facades are being replaced with new facades featuring glass and plastered insulation.
The original structure from 1963 has been exposed and thus preserved, whereas the appearance of the facades has changed significantly. The importance of preserving the load-bearing structures lay both in their aesthetic value and in maintaining the existing large open interior space.
Rovsingsgade 68 is highlighted in the Danish Agency for Social Affairs and Housing’s “Guide to the Reuse of Load-Bearing Structures” (2023), prepared in collaboration with ABC and the Danish Technological Institute, as a green pilot project; the study shows that the transformation has resulted in a 71% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a similar new construction project. The reduction is due to the fact that the original column-and-beam system was reused in the new building.
Quote
“It’s been exciting to take a not-so-attractive warehouse—one that many would have torn down—and transform it into a beautiful, modern office building with a strong focus on the exposed structural elements while preserving the building’s aesthetic. A new, simple, and raw—yet incredibly beautiful—facade and design that blends well with the surroundings.”
