Nature of the Project
The project involves a comprehensive renovation of a large childcare facility in Hørsholm, initiated in response to sudden and extensive water damage and mold problems, as well as identified leaks in the roof structure.
The extent of the damage necessitated the complete relocation of the center’s operations—including staff and more than 110 children—for the entire duration of the renovation. The renovation focused particularly on the roof structure and the facility’s indoor climate, as well as the installation of load-bearing structures and surfaces such as floors and walls. Extensive structural and technical measures were implemented to ensure lasting solutions with high operational reliability and a healthy indoor climate.
The project was planned and executed with great attention to moisture protection, ventilation, daylight conditions, and material selection, thereby minimizing future risks related to the indoor climate. In addition, the facade was redesigned and replaced due to construction and design errors made by the previous contractor.
The original Solhuset was known as an energy-efficient facility with a focus on daylight, solar panels, and geothermal heating, and these fundamental principles have been carried forward into the renovated facility.
Modern and flexible learning environments have been created that support both educational and indoor climate requirements. The renovation has thus combined technical upgrades with a holistic approach to the building’s function and use.
After a renovation period of approximately two years, the institution reopened in the spring of 2025 under the name Børneuniverset. The name change marks a renewed focus on the institution’s core mission, with a strengthened understanding of children’s individual needs and learning prerequisites.
The project’s overarching mission is to create a physical setting that promotes all children’s well-being, learning, development, and personal growth—supported by a healthy indoor climate and modern learning environments.
