In 2025, for example, new regulations for the construction process were introduced, placing a sharp focus on transportation to and from the construction site, as well as on construction waste and energy consumption at the site. The many requirements and regulations can be difficult to navigate, and it is a major challenge to comply with them if they are not factored into material selection and design solutions from the outset.

All too often, the industry’s solution is to tear down these buildings and build new ones on the cleared site, and this is where we in the construction industry need to get much better at reusing existing structures. Therefore, the first instinct should always be to explore the possibilities of building upon the existing building stock and transforming it to meet the building’s new needs.

This reduces both the need to produce new, high-carbon building materials and, at the same time, minimizes the amount of construction waste and transportation to and from the construction site.

In collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute, we have developed a guide and case study folder for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing

Reusing a building’s load-bearing structures results in a lower environmental impact during construction, economic benefits, and less waste than demolishing and rebuilding. However, there are many technical challenges involved in repurposing existing buildings, especially if the physical structure is no longer up to date and must therefore be transformed for a new use.
